This article explores the links between travel and identity by analyzing user-generated content on TripAdvisor.com: "trip reports" written by the site's users. The overwhelming majority of such narratives are positive; thus, I also offer suggestions for travel marketers to encourage visitors to post their own online travel stories.
Designed to Sell: An Analysis of Rhetoric on HGTV (2011)
This article examines the visual and textual rhetoric of HGTV, the leading real estate and interior design television content provider. It demonstrates how subtly encoded messages encourage consumers to trust the shows' hosts and thereby increase desire for products and services shown on the network.
Baja California: See For Yourself (2009-2010)
An ongoing project of the Emerson College Baja Coalition. I led an Emerson College crisis-management team working with town of Rosarito, Mexico to revitalize tourism. Visited the town, met with mayor and staff, local business owners, and residents to discover their needs and improve communication strategies. I also simplified the website interface to improve usability for target audiences, and gave a public presentation of the project at the International Academy of Business Disciplines conference in 2010.
